CT scanning—sometimes called CAT scanning—is a noninvasive medical test that helps physicians diagnose and treat medical conditions. CT scanning combines special x-ray equipment with sophisticated computers to produce multiple images or pictures of the inside of the body. These cross-sectional images of the area being studied can then be examined on a computer monitor, printed or transferred to a CD. CT scans of internal organs, bones, soft tissue and blood vessels provide greater clarity and reveal more details than regular x-ray exams.     Precautions to be taken for CT Scan.

In case of contrast CT scan studies, fasting of atleast 3 to 4 hrs is required. In case of CECT Whole abdomen 4-6 hrs minimum fasting is required. One attendant is required in case of Contrast studies. Pregnant females are not allowed to undergo the CT investigation unless absolutely necessary and after proper lead shielding of abdomen.

The investigation lasts for not more than an hour, depending on the preparation needed (example oral contrast consumption in abdomen CT Scans), and whether it includes the use of contrast medium. The scan itself may take just a few minutes.
