COLOUR DOPPLER

A Colour Doppler ultrasound is a special non invasive ultrasound technique that allows the doctor to see and evaluate blood flowing through arteries and veins in various parts of the body such as the abdomen, arms, legs, neck and brain or within various body organs such as the liver or kidneys.

This ultrasound examination is usually completed within 30 to 45 minutes. Occasionally, complex examinations may take longer.

What is duplex ultrasound used for?

The scan can help diagnose the following conditions:

  • Blockage to an artery (an arterial occlusion).
  • Blood clot.
  • Blockage to the arteries in the neck (carotid occlusive disease).
  • Renal duplex examines the kidneys and their blood vessels.
  • Varicose veins.
  • Venous insufficiency (a condition where veins have a problem sending blood back to the heart).

Some of The Uses of Color Doppler are:

  • Obstetric colour Doppler with Bio-Physical Profile
  • Peripheral Vascular Colour Doppler – Arterial or venous
  • Limb Doppler – Upper or lower limbs
  • Renal Doppler - examines the kidneys and their blood vessels. Eg : – in hypertensive patients
  • Scrotal doppler
  • Carotid doppler
  • Penile Doppler
  • Liver

How should I prepare?

  • You should wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing for your ultrasound exam. You may need to remove all clothing and jewellery in the area to be examined.
  • You may be asked to wear a gown during the procedure.
  • Usually no fasting is required, unless an abdomen (renal) Doppler examination is being performed
  • Always carry old records and doctor’s prescription at the time of examination
