Prime Minister Narendra Modi Saturday launched India’s Covid-19 vaccination drive, the world’s largest inoculation exercise against the novel coronavirus. In a virtual address, an emotional PM Modi paid tribute to scientists and healthcare workers, who have been on the frontlines of the pandemic.

"Amid the crisis and the atmosphere of despair, someone was transmitting hope by putting his life on the line to save us," PM Modi said. He added that safety protocol, including social distancingand wearing masks, must remain in place.

ABOUT THE TWO INDIGENOUS VACCINES

India is entering a decisive phase of vaccination in the fight against COVID-19, and the world's largest vaccination programme will start from January 16.

Two vaccines have been granted restricted emergency use approval by India’s Drugs controller early this year.

1. Bharat Biotech’s Covaxin, and
2. Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine locally manufactured by Serum Institute of India under the name of Covishield.

GENERAL GUIDELINES

Union govt issues guidelines for covid vaccination

  • The covid vaccine will be offered first to healthcare workers, frontline workers and to persons above 50 years of age, according to operational guidelines for vaccination issued by the Union health ministry on Monday.
  • It will then be offered to persons younger than 50 years of age with associated co-morbidities based on the evolving pandemic situation, and finally to the remaining population based on the disease epidemiology and vaccine availability, the guidelines state.

CONTRAINDICATIONS

(means individuals who will not be adminstered the vaccine)

  • Administration of the vaccine in persons with a history of anaphylactic or allergic reaction to a previous dose of COVID-19 vaccine, and in those with immediate or delayed onset anaphylaxis or allergic reaction to vaccines or injectable therapies, pharmaceutical products, food items, among others.
  • In case of persons having active symptoms of SARS-CoV-2 infection, coronavirus infected patients who have been given anti-SARS-CoV-2 monoclonal antibodies or convalescent plasma and acutely unwell and hospitalised patients due to any illness, the COVID-19 vaccination is to be deferred for four to eight weeks after recovery.
  • "Pregnant and lactating women have not been a part of any COVID-19 vaccine clinical trial so far. Therefore, women who are pregnant or not sure of their pregnancy and lactating women should not receive COVID-19 vaccine at this time,".
  • The vaccine should be administered with caution in persons with a history of any bleeding or coagulation disorder (like clotting factor deficiency, coagulopathy or platelet disorder, it said.

VACCINE SAFETY

  • Safety is not being compromised but still it’s not known how effective the vaccine is due to lack of data.
  • If you have food allergies, then this vaccine is not for you yet – the government has also said this in a recent advisory. Always consult your physician before opting for the vaccine.
  • The vaccines have been approved by the national drugs regulator only after looking at the clinical trials data both from animals and humans.
  • The safety and immunogenicity of both the vaccines has been well established.

ADVERSE EFFECTS

  • It is normal to have certain reactions after a vaccination: There may be redness, swelling or pain around the injection site. Fatigue, fever, headache and aching limbs are also not uncommon in the first three days after vaccination. These normal vaccine reactions are usually mild and subside after a few days
  • In such cases, the fact sheets says the common painkiller paracetamol may be used “to provide symptomatic relief from post vaccination adverse reaction”

  • How does COVID-19 Vaccine compare against the Vaccines for other viruses?
  • Not all vaccines are equally effective, some, like the Seasonal Flu vaccine are below 60%, others like the Polio Virus vaccine are almost 100% effective. The Pfizer Novel Coronavirus vaccine is 95% while the AstraZeneca Novel Coronavirus vaccine is 70% effective.
  • Do I still need to wear a mask once I am vaccinated?
  • Yes, you must carry on with all the precautions such as wearing a mask, frequent washing of hands and social distancing.
  • Are COVID-19 Vaccines safe since they are developed and tested quickly?
  • The Emergency situation warranted an Emergency response. That does not mean that the Pharmaceutical companies bypassed safety protocols or performed inadequate testing.
  • I already had COVID-19, and have recovered. Do I still need to get vaccinated?
  • There is not enough evidence currently available to say if or for how long after infection someone is protected from getting COVID-19 again (Natural Immunity) Mayo Clinic & CDC recommend getting the COVID-19 Vaccine even if you've had COVID-19 previously.
  • Will the COVID-19 Vaccine alter my DNA?
  • Some of the vaccines are mRNA vaccines which instruct cells to make a protein that triggers an immune response mRNA do not enter the nucleus of the cell and do not interact with your DNA Human Cells break down and get rid of the mRNA soon after they have finished using the instruction.
  • If one is taking medicines for cancer, diabetes, hypertension or any other chronic condition, can the vaccine still be taken?

  • What documents does one need for vaccination?
  • Documents such as driving licence, health insurance, smart card issued by the Ministry of Labour, MNREGA guarantee card, MNREGA job card, official identity card issued by MPs, MLAs, PAN card, passbook of bank or post office, passport, pension documents, service identity card issued to employees by central/state government or public limited companies, and Voter ID cards can be used for registration.
  • Will the vaccine introduced in India be as effective as the ones introduced in other countries?
  • Yes, the Covid-19 vaccine introduced in India will be as effective as any vaccine developed in other countries.
  • Can a person with an active Covid-19 infection be vaccinated?
  • A person with active and symptomatic Covid-19 infection may increase the risk of spreading the same to others at vaccination site. Also, we do not know how effective the vaccine will be in such a situation when one already has an active infection. Active and symptomatic individuals should defer vaccination for at least 14 days after the symptoms are resolved.
  • Is it necessary for a recovered person to take the vaccine?
  • It is advisable to receive the complete schedule of the Covid vaccine irrespective of past history of infection. This will help develop better immune response against the disease.
  • How many doses of the vaccine would have to be taken by a person and at what interval?
  • Two doses of vaccine, 28 days apart, are needed. This needs to be taken by all to complete the vaccination schedule.
  • When would antibodies develop? After taking first dose, after taking the second dose, or much later?
  • Protective levels of antibodies will generally develop two weeks after receiving the second dose of Covid-19 vaccine.
